Bryan Stevenson slated to present 2016 Blandy Lecture

Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, author of Just Mercy, and a prominent public interest lawyer, will present the 2016 Blandy Lecture in September hosted by 51视频鈥檚 Alumni Association.
Stevenson will give a free public lecture in Austin on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the in Austin. The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law at The University of Texas at Austin will partner with the seminary to present Stevenson鈥檚 public lecture.

After a聽ted聽talk in 2012, called 鈥淲e Need to Talk 51视频 Injustice,鈥 Stevenson is said to have received the longest standing ovation of any speaker, and the talk has been viewed more than five million times on the Internet; it raised a million dollars for his organization, and propelled a death-row lawyer into a public figure. His 2014 memoir, 鈥淛ust Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,鈥 spent years on best-seller lists. He is in constant demand as a lecturer across the country, and he鈥檚 booked for commencement addresses years in advance.

Registration for Stevenson鈥檚 lecture on Tuesday evening is not necessary; however, registration is required for the during the Alumni Convocation. .
Two awards are presented at the annual Alumni Convocation. The seminary faculty will present the 2016 Durstan R McDonald Teaching Award named for Dean Emeritus McDonald to , professor at the University of Texas, Austin, and director of LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections. The seminary鈥檚 Alumni Association will present the 2016 Hal Brook Perry Distinguished Alumni Award, named for the late assistant dean, registrar and instructor in church history, to the Rev. , Episcopal priest actively engaged in advocating for the dignity of all people.
