Gayle Fisher Stewart\, PhD. \n5:30 p.m. 鈥� Litany in Christ Chapel \n6:00 p.m. 鈥� Reception in the Howell Dining Hall \n7:00 p.m. 鈥� Lecture in Knapp Auditorium \nPlease RSVP here for the event. \n \nGayle Fisher-Stewart is a priest in the Diocese of Washington.聽 A native Washingtonian\, prior to accepting the call to ordained ministry\, she retired from the Metropolitan Police Department as a captain and then taught at the university level.聽 She also consulted for the International City/County Management Association\, the U.S. Department of Justice and local government organizations. Throughout her career\, she has been ever mindful of the effects of racism in the criminal justice system\, the educational system\, and various communities in which she has served. She has been an outspoken advocate for making the reign of God a reality for everyone based on her belief that 鈥渨e don鈥檛 have to live this way.鈥� The violence\, economic inequities\, racism and all the other -isms and phobias are choices we make in violation of the love God showed at creation and continues to show in spite of human beings 鈥渕issing the mark.鈥� After nine years as president of the Crummell-Cooper Chapter\, Union of Black Episcopalians\, she has turned over the gavel to a new president and continues to serve on the diocesan reparations committee and as the chaplain for the Takoma Park Police Department (MD). She served on the diocesan finance committee and the Washington National Cathedral鈥檚 racial justice committee and was part of the committee that pushed for the removal of the Robert E. Lee-Stonewall Jackson windows at the Cathedral. She was the 2024 recipient of the Union of Black Episcopalians 鈥淏ishop Quentin Primo\, Jr.鈥� award for 鈥渆xtraordinary leadership as a pastor and advocate for justice in the community\, church and beyond.鈥� \n聽Committed to making the reign of God real for everyone at the grass-roots level\, she has written on race\, policing and the Episcopal Church.聽 鈥淭o Serve and Protect:聽 Race\, the Police and the Episcopal Church in the Black Lives Matter Era鈥� was published in the Summer (2017) edition of the 鈥淎nglican Theological Review.鈥� Her book\, Preaching Black Lives (Matter) (2020) asks and answers the question\, what would the church look like if black lives mattered? In Black and Episcopalian: The Struggle for Inclusion (2021)\, she makes the case that African Americans should be able to bring their authentic selves to the church and not be forced to fit into a mold determined by the dominant culture. In response to the uprisings over the police murder of Mr. George Floyd\, she developed and presented the curriculum: 鈥淭o Serve and Protect: Bridging the Gap Between the Police and the Black Community.鈥� She recently published the 2nd edition of her third book\, Church Hurt: Reparations for My Soul 鈥� Healing Racialized Trauma\, which makes the case that the trauma of racism and white supremacy must be fully acknowledged before the church can begin the process of reparations/repair and what needs to be done in our current age. \nShe lives in Takoma Park\, MD\, and the love of her life is her son\, David. \nView the live-stream for the event here.\nHosted by 51视频鈥檚 Board of Trustees\, and led by the students of 51视频\, the聽Payne-Harvey Lecture聽is an annual event that focuses on mission and the relationship between pastoral leadership and contemporary issues confronting the church. It honors the聽Rt. Rev. Claude E. Payne\, former chair of the seminary鈥檚 board and bishop of the Diocese of Texas\, retired\, and the late聽Dean Hudnall Harvey\, who died unexpectedly in 1972\, after serving as the seminary鈥檚 dean for just five years. \nOver the years\, these Lectures have become a lasting and vital resource for the seminary\, bringing important and diverse theological voices to our campus.

SUMMARY:Holy Week and the Triduum 2026
DESCRIPTION:Holy Week and the Triduum\n51视频 will begin its observance of Holy Week and the Triduum on Monday\, March 30th. The paschal mystery we celebrate is the energizing source of our life together. \nThe entire community is invited and encouraged to attend. Families are welcome\, as are any guests. We expect all students preparing for ordained ministry to participate in the week鈥檚 liturgies. Faculty members will be preaching at the Eucharist each day. \nOn Monday through Wednesday of Holy Week\, the worship schedule is as usual: Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m.\, Eucharist at 11:45 a.m.\, and Evening Prayer at 5 p.m. (except on Tuesday when Tenebrae replaces Evening Prayer). Unless otherwise noted\, all services will be celebrated with procession and music and held in Christ Chapel. \nPlease note the following unique Holy Week services: \n聽 \n\nHoly Tuesday (March 31\, 2026)\n\n\nTenebrae\, 5:00 p.m.\, Christ Chapel\n\n\nPlease join us in Christ Chapel on Holy Tuesday\, March 31st\, for a service structured around chanted psalms\, readings\, and responsories. The distinctive ceremonial of the service includes fifteen candles\, symbolizing the triumph of Christ over evil and death. \n\nMaundy Thursday (April 2\, 2026)\n\n\nNoonday Prayer\, 11:45 a.m.\, Christ Chapel\, with the Exhortation\n\n\nMaundy Thursday Holy Eucharist\, 5:30 p.m.\, Christ Chapel\n\n\nMaundy Thursday Eucharist with Foot Washing and Stripping of the Altar. Following the Maundy Thursday Service\, we will hold an Agape Meal in Howell Dining Hall.
